How do DVConnect and Queensland Police work together?

When people experience domestic, family or sexual violence, they may have very different ideas about who they want to receive support from.

At DVConnect, our aim is to help people to choose the pathway to safety that is right for them.

You might have decided you want to leave immediately, and don’t want to call the police. Or maybe the right choice for you is to make a police report. You could even decide you’re not ready to leave yet, but you need help making a safety plan to protect yourself and your family when the time is right.

Whatever your choice, DVConnect is here to support you. We work closely with the Queensland Police Service to ensure we are providing the right support you need to be safe.

How will DVConnect help?

DVConnect provides Queensland’s 24/7 crisis response to people impacted by domestic, family and sexual violence. DVConnect Womensline can help you find a pathway to safety tonight by providing emergency transport and emergency accommodation. We can also provide brief counselling and safety planning.

You do NOT need to make a police report to access DVConnect services. When you call DVConnect Womensline on 1800 811 811, you will speak to one of our counsellors. They will ask you about your situation and help you find safety.

DVConnect Mensline is also available to men who are experiencing or using violence in their relationships. You do NOT need a police referral to access DVConnect Mensline services. When you call DVConnect Mensline on 1800 600 636, one of our counsellors will be able to provide you with brief counselling, information and advice.

DVConnect services are free and confidential. We operate with strict privacy guidelines, and any information you provide to us will be treated with respect. Your safety is our utmost priority.

DVConnect provides support to people when they are in a crisis, or at imminent risk of harm. For ongoing support, DVConnect will refer you to your local specialist DFSV service. We work with a strong network of support services to ensure you will receive the help you need.

DVConnect Womensline services are provided virtually, usually over the phone. This means we can work with anyone, at any time, anywhere in Queensland.  However, this does mean we are not able to physically meet you or assist you.

How will the Queensland Police help?

Queensland Police are the first responders in many domestic and family violence situations. Their first priority is to ensure the safety of everyone.

Queensland Police will provide immediate support, but if you need to find a pathway to safety tonight, they will likely refer you to DVConnect.

If you need a protective order, such as a DVO, the police may apply for one on your behalf. You can also apply for one privately. If you need support with this, you may wish to contact Women’s Legal Service QLDCaxton Legal Centre, or Legal Aid Queensland

When will DVConnect and Queensland Police share information?

DVConnect does not automatically share information with Queensland Police. We will only share information without consent in very limited circumstances where there is a serious and immediate risk to someone’s safety, or as required by law.

Queensland Police have a dedicated pathway to contact DVConnect. They frequently refer people to DVConnect when they attend domestic violence incidents. DVConnect receives thousands of referrals to both DVConnect Womensline and DVConnect Mensline from the Police every year.

It’s important to remember that DVConnect is a confidential service. While we may ask for your name or details to help provide the best tailored support, you do not need to give these. We encourage people to choose if, when and how they engage with the Police and other services.

Domestic, family and sexual violence is complex. By working alongside other services, including the Queensland Police Service, DVConnect aims to ensure people experiencing violence can access the right support at the right time.
