If you’re escaping domestic or family violence and need a safe place, call DVConnect. We can help you access shelters (or refuge), connect you with local specialist services, explore staying with a trusted family member or friend, or help you find another safe alternative.
Shelters
Women’s shelters (also called safe houses or refuges) offer secure accommodation and specialist support for women and children escaping domestic and family violence. We work with shelters across Queensland and help families access these safe places every day.
Shelters are not the only option or even the first option to keep you safe. Shelter spaces are in high demand, so our crisis counsellors will ask you first if you have a family member or friend who is safe to stay with, or if you have other accommodation options available.
What to expect at Shelters
- Shelters vary and can be communal or provide self-contained units.
- Shelters provide temporary accommodation where women and children stay for a couple of weeks or a few months.
- Shelters are staffed by qualified workers who help women rebuild and prepare for life after refuge.
- To ensure your safety and security, shelter locations and details are confidential. Most shelters require residents not to share this information, even with family.
- Shelters can’t store large items or furniture, so it’s best to pack only essentials and leave bigger belongings with someone you trust or in storage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I stay at the women’s shelter?
Shelters are there to provide a safe place before your next steps. Depending on your situation and the shelter’s capacity this can be for several weeks to a few months. The shelter will make plans alongside you, so you will always be in the know.
What are women’s shelters like?
Shelters offer different types of accommodation. Some provide self-contained family units with a private kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Others are communal, giving you a private room for you and your children, while sharing living spaces with other women and children.
How do I arrange safe accommodation?
We will need to speak with you personally and will ask you details about your current situation. Call DVConnect Womensline 1800 811 811.
What can I take with me?
Safe accommodation can’t store furniture or large belongings. You can only bring essentials like clothing, toiletries and a few small personal or sentimental belongings like jewellery, photographs and children’s favourite toys.
Can I get legal advice when I call?
While DVConnect cannot provide legal assistance, we work closely with services that may be able to assist you such as Women’s Legal Service Queensland, Caxton Legal Centre and Legal Aid Queensland. You can reach out to these services directly via their websites.
Will the women’s shelter be able to meet my needs as a woman from a culturally and linguistically diverse background?
Women’s shelters are sensitive to different cultures and religions and will, wherever possible, accommodate the needs of people to participate in their religion.
