DVConnect provides crisis accommodation and transport for anyone at imminent risk of harm. If you’re currently experiencing domestic and family violence and need to leave tonight, call DVConnect. We can also provide shelter for your children and explore accommodation options for your pets.

What crisis accommodation options are available from DVConnect?

There are a few different options for crisis accommodation. When you call DVConnect, we will ask you some questions about your situation to help you find the right pathway to safety. Accommodation options might include:

  • Hotel accommodation
  • Women’s shelters (also called safe houses or refuges)
  • Staying with safe family or friends.

We help anyone who needs to find safety tonight. This includes women and their children, and men. Women’s shelters are specifically for women and people who identify as women. Other accommodation options, including hotels, are available for men and people who identify as men. Options are also available for trans, non-binary and gender diverse people. When you call, we will help you find an accommodation option that suits your needs.

About Women’s Shelters

Women’s shelters offer secure accommodation and specialist support for women and children escaping domestic and family violence. We work with shelters across Queensland and help families access these safe places every day.

What to expect at a shelter

To ensure your safety and security, shelter locations and details are confidential. Most shelters require residents not to share this information, even with family.

    About Hotel Accommodation

In some cases, if there are no better options available, you may be offered accommodation in a hotel. This may be in your local area or further away, depending on your safety concerns. Your motel room will be booked under an alias to protect your privacy.

Similar to shelters, you will not be able to bring large items to hotel accommodation. You can bring clothing and toiletries, your children’s favourite toys, and small personal items. We may be able to connect you with other services to store your belongings – we will discuss this with you when you call.

If you need food or clothing, we may be able to provide you with a voucher to support you through the first few nights.

Hotel accommodation is typically a very short stay in a crisis situation. You will stay here while we connect you with other options and services so you can plan your next steps.

Your DVConnect counsellor can give you more information about accessing hotel accommodation.

    Getting to crisis accommodation

DVConnect can help you find a way to a safe place, no matter where you live in Queensland. If you don’t have access to a car, we can still help.

For most people in metro areas, we will help you find your way to safe accommodation via public transport. This is often the quickest and safest option. Depending on your unique circumstances, the DVConnect counsellor may discuss other options with you. Taxis are another common form of transport that are safe and readily available. If you live in a very remote area, your options might also include a train, plane or boat.

When you call DVConnect, the counsellor will discuss all these options with you. They will also discuss safety planning in case you can’t leave immediately (for example, if you are in a very remote location and need to wait for a flight out, or if you are trapped somewhere due to bad weather).

We have helped people in communities across Queensland find a pathway to safety. Please call DVConnect for support.
