What is Domestic Violence?Domestic Violence is an abuse of power. It occurs when one person in an intimate relationship engages in behaviour that causes fear or harm to the other person. This can include physical violence, damage to property, non-consensual sexual contact, financial control, emotional manipulation and abuse, or threats to commit any of the above.
Quick Fact:In 1996, the Australian Bureau of Statistics conducted a Women's Safety Survey which found that more than 1 million women reported having experienced domestic violence from a previous partner. Of these 60% said that they lived in fear during a relationship and 11% said that they continue to live in fear.
